My Summer at the CDC!

My name is Faith Johnny, I am a current summer student at the Child Development Centre. My summer at the Child Development Centre has been an amazing experience. I was greeted by the staff kindly; I was welcomed in as if I was there permanently. In my 18 years of living, I have never had a job treat me this well. The CDC staff guided me and taught me more about working in childcare, I’ve learned so much in just the two months I’ve been here. I slowly got out of my fear of talking in a room full of people because of how kind this staff is. During my first week, I didn’t think I had what it took to be able to do this job perfectly and professionally. After spending the past two months working at the CDC, I’ve realized how great I can be when talking to not only co-workers but clients as well. I finally understand what I am in for when I go to university to get my Early Childhood Education. This job easily made me love working in childcare more, the first summer group I attended was the “Horsin’ Around Program.” The Horsin' Around program was by far my favorite group to attend, I enjoy horseback riding, and I love working with the children; it was my two favorite things in one!

During the program, I learned more about horses, but I also had the chance to teach the volunteers and kiddos new things about horses as well. Throughout this program, I was able to see so many different moods people were feeling and watch those moods be calmed down through equine therapy. It was beautiful seeing the children bond with and slowly trust the horses they were riding. It was also great working with Ruth and Mackenna during this time, Ruth taught me so many new things about horses, and I am so glad I had the opportunity to work alongside her. I would gladly help with this program in the future. The next group I worked with was “Summer Smiles (ages 3-5)” with Jade, Val, and Annikki. During this group, I had the opportunity to learn more about working one on one with children like a behavior interventionist would do. I’m thankful that I got to work one on one with a few children because being a BI has also been a big dream job of mine. I’ve also helped a lot with the Early Years Program that happens every Monday and Wednesday at 10:00 am. The Early Years Program has taught me how to be able to speak with all clients, including the parents, in a professional manner. Just today, I joined in on the Teen Group run by Mala, Annikki, and Shelly; the theme today was life skills, so we took a trip to Freshco and bought pizza ingredients to make pizza! The teens had a lot of fun, and so did I. I sat in on a session with Cheyenne, and we played Snakes & Ladders and made slime with her client. I enjoy learning more about one-on-one work because I believe it helps children/teens, and I want to one day be able to provide that same amount of help. 😊

The CDC has brought back my love for working with children and has expanded my mindset by giving me more to think about what to do to further my education in the future. I enjoyed working with George on Foundry preparations and learning about the Foundry. George is a very great role model, and I hope that one day, I can work with him again. I also helped in administrative roles; I learned how to speak over the phone without getting anxious, and I learned how to do all the fun office work! Thank you to Tracy and Jadyn for guiding me and helping me throughout my time here. You both were such a pleasure to talk to, and I am going to miss you both! I have enjoyed my time working here at the Child Development Centre, and I hope that one day I can be here full-time because this is the type of work environment I wat to be in. I thank Mahtab, Vanessa, Stephanie, George & Danya for giving me the opportunity to work with such an amazing staff and for helping me learn more about my dream Job. 😊
